The company was founded in 1899 as the Chicago Solder Company to produce flux-cored solder. This patented Kester manufacturing process has had a major impact in the electronics industry to this day. As Kester grew and gained success, the company opened manufacturing facilities in Brantford, Ontario, Canada in 1931 and Anaheim, California in 1959. In 1967, Litton Systems Division of Litton Industries acquired Kester.
Kester recognized the importance of being a global supplier in the electronics industry by establishing manufacturing facilities in Singapore (1969) and in Germany (1972) to better service the Asian and European markets, respectively. In 1990, Kester acquired Blackstone Flux. This facility produced and developed products for the automotive heat exchanger and wire/strip tinning markets.
In efforts to further extend the product line offering, Kester acquired the assets of two divisions of the Gardiner Metals Company in 1995 - Gardiner Solder and Techform Laboratories. To handle the growing demand in Asia, facilities were opened in Taiwan (1992), and Malaysia (1996).
Kester continued to expand in 1998 by acquiring the IEM electronic solder paste product line from Fusion Incorporated and the assets of Cramco Solder Alloys Limited in Canada. Again in 1999, Kester grew by acquiring Tarutin Co., Ltd. of Japan. In 2001, Kester joined Northrop Grumman's newly established Component Technologies Sector.
